Grand Final Wrap

Hillgrove Fathers and Sons Steer them to Title

Hillgrove took out the Fourth Grade Grand Final thanks to the efforts of Ian Reeves (50 ret.), Hugh Reeves (51) and Mick Brennan (42) who steered them to 9/189 batting first against Servies.Youngster, Hugh set his side up for a big total, opening with a half century and found good support from the two elder statesmen. In reply, Servies were in trouble straight away, when Reece Cropper dismissed Servies captain Warren Bartik LBW with his first ball. Servies rebuilt through Charles Rao (44), John Elliot (6) and Cody Graham (15), before Scott Brennan took 5/17 to skittle Servies for 112. The match was highlighted by sensational catch from Mick Doyle of Servies to dismiss Brennan and a direct hit run out to dismiss Matt Bindley, while Ian Reeves backed up his batting exploits to take two vital outfield catches.

Hillgrove Premiership side:  Ian Reeves (c), Matt Bindley, Mick Brennan, Scott Brennan, Reece Cropper, Harrison Dickson, Tony Jones, Harrison King, Clancy Moar, Hugh Reeves, Anthony Stewart.

St Kilda Claim First Premiership After Dominant Season

The Third Grade Grand Final saw St Kilda hold off a Guyra in the 2nd innings to secure the title after dismissing Guyra for 84 in the first innings thanks to the bowling of Tim Muir (4/14) and Nick Levy (4/23).  In reply, St Kilda did not have it all their own way, but managed a 40 run lead thanks to Jacob Davies (34 no) and Mick Bishop (24), while BJ Kliendienst took 4 wickets to restrict the St Kilda lead.  The second day commenced with Guyra needing to set a big total and then bowl St Kilda out to take the title. They started the task well, scoring 176 thanks to Kyle Taylor (56) and Steve Brazier (37 ret inj.) with Jacob Davies (3/23) and Nick Levy (3/41) the pick of St Kilda's attack. This left Kilda needing to score 135 to win outright or to bat out 39 overs to win on 1st innings.  They were quickly in trouble though, as BJ Kliendienst (3/36) took out both openers in his first 2 overs to have them reeling before Geoff Maxwell and Matt Munzenrider steadied the ship with a 19 over partnership, but it was youngster Jacob Davies (40 no) who remained unbeaten for 24 overs to steer St Kilda to 6/112, ensuring a 1st innings win and St Kilda's first Premiership.

St Kilda Premiership side:  Steve Davies (c), Mick Bishop, Steve Bishop, Jacob Davies, Keith Kelly, Nick Levy, Geoff Maxwell, Tim Muir, Matt Munzenrider, Justin Northam, Shannon Rafferty, Rick Whittley.

Hillgrove Too Strong After Stellar Season.

Hillgrove proved too strong for Guyra in the Second Grade Grand Final.  Batting first, Hillgrove set up an unbeatable 9/299 after being 8/158 thanks to a 137 run 9th wicket stand from Jeremy Rowlings (92 no) and Doug Moore (56) after Tom Prosser (41) had led the top order.  For Guyra, Mitch Woods (4/47 off 21 overs) stood tall.  In reply, Guyra were well placed at 1-99, but lost Mitch Woods (53 to go with his bowling) and then batting star Tom Skipper (0) to slump to 3-99, and despite lower order resistance from Darren Lennon (34) and Fred Keeping (32), they were dismissed for 197 by a bowling attack led by Byron Whackett (3/32), Nick Sewell (3/33) and the irrepressible Phil McElroy (3/51 of 20.3 overs) to secure the Premiership after a season which saw Hillgrove lose only lost match.

Hillgrove Premiership side:  Blair Chalmers (c), Nick Sewell, Ben Marshall, Phil McElroy, Doug Moore, Tom Prosser, Jeremy Rowlings, Sam Sewell, Dave Waters, Declan Waters, Byron Whackett.

Easts Sneak Home in Real Nail-biter

Easts secured the First Grade Grand Final in the most thrilling decider in years.  Hillgrove, batting first, scored 213 after being 2/97.  Matt Baillie (42), Adam O'Sullivan (41) and Matt Schaeffer (36) all made starts, but none could go on with them as Easts accurate bowling attack, led by captain Greg Carson (4/56) and Joe Horneman (4/47) made the valuable breakthroughs.  The turning point in the Hillgrove inning could well have been the run out of Brad King (1) by Alex Frost.  In reply, Easts started well, led by Dean Moore (67) and looked to have it in the bag at 7/183 before Andrew Curry (3/37) picked up the vital wicket of Nathan Porter (54).  Easts were then 9/197 when Curry struck again to have Horneman caught.  This left Carson and Brad Schumacher needing 20 runs to steal the win, while Hillgrove strove for just one more wicket.  Tension in the stands reached fever pitch as Easts counted off the runs until the scores were levelled.  Mitch Moore got the ball he wanted and drew the edge from Carson's bat only to see the chance slip past keeper Josh Croft (26).  Easts scurried through to take the winning run in the closest of Grand Finals in recent memory as Easts felt the jubilation of success and Hillgrove bitter disappointment of defeat, though I am certain all players and spectators felt the full gamut of emotions in that last ball in a fitting end to a fantastic season of Armidale District Cricket.

Easts Premiership side:  Greg Carson (c), Matt Foster, Alex Frost, Lachlan Fulloon, Joe Horneman, Matt House, Dean Moore, Nathan Porter, Matt Preston, Brad Schumacher, Alex Thomas, Luke Uphill.

Armidale Cricket Grand Finals This Weekend

The Armidale Disctrict Cricket Association will celebrate the culmination of a highly successful season with Grand Finals in four grades this Weekend.  In a season that has seen the spectacular success of the inaugural Armidale Premier League 20/20 competition and the Dumaresq Colts taking out the Connelly Cup with a convincing win over Moree, it all goes down to the wire for Easts, Hillgrove, Guyra, St Kilda and Ex-Services.

In 1st grade, Hillgrove booked a place in the decider against arch-rivals Easts with a convincing win over a spirited City side.  Batting first at the Sportsground, Hillgrove were in deep trouble at 3/19 until Brad King (113) and Adam O'Sullivan (61) put on a 4th wicket stand of 152.  King showed the benefit of a few weeks off and crunched 14 picket rattling boundaries in his big knock.  The pair were well supported by Bentley Cropper (49 no) and keeper Josh Croft (33) as the 'Grove piled on 284, batting through the first day.  Nick Ada (4/54) took the big wickets and Andrew Skinner (3/42) also toiled hard.  In reply, City were in deep trouble at 2/1 when they lost first Christian Gerard, and then Captain Andrew Brownlie for a duck as Mitch Moore (3/17) took out both openers in a great opening burst.  City struggled to build solid partnerships to support an outstanding century from Nick Ada (111) to back up his fine bowling, with only Chris Lawrie (35) and keeper Derek Schnieder (33) holding firm.  After Moore did the early damage, O'Sullivan (3/35) took 3 lower order wickets.  Nick Ada was the last man out at 215 in an outstanding personal effort.

The 69 run victory gives Hillgrove another crack at Minor Premiers, Easts, whose strong bowling attack of Matt House, Joe Horneman, Greg Carson and the tirelessly accurate spin of Brad Schumacher should see them as favourites for the Big One, but they will nurse memories of the mauling dealt out by Matt Schaeffer in the One Day Final, and with Adam O'Sullivan and Brad King finding form, Easts will know that nothing can be taken for granted when these sides meet in Finals.  Easts batting has relied heavily on Alex Frost and Lachlan Fulloon, while Luke Uphill is a youngster to watch and Matt Foster can take a game away in a short stay at the crease, let alone a longer one.  They will be pitted against a Hillgrove attack heavily reliant on Andrew Curry (28 wickets) and young all-rounder Mitch Moore, with handy spin from Bentley Cropper.  My pick is Easts bowling to be too strong for Hillgrove, but this one is harder to pick than a broken nose given the number of top class competitors in both sides.

1st Grade Grand Final:  Easts v. Hillgrove at Armidale Sportsground, Saturday 1:15 - 5:30 & Sunday 10:00 - 5.30.

In 2nd grade, Guyra set up a fascinating rematch against Hillgrove after the two sides tied in the Major Semi-Final 2 weeks ago.  On that occasion, a 10 man Guyra stretched Hillgrove to the limit and Guyra would have to feel confident after their comfortable win over Easts in the Preliminary Final.  Guyra have batsmen in form like Tom Skipper, Troy Martin, Matt Jackson and Mitch Woods (who also tore into Hillgrove with the ball, taking 6/46 last time they played) and an attack led by Matt Bull, Justin McKay, James Sharpe and Jackson.  However they will be pitted against a batting attack ably led by Blair Chalmers, Tom Prosser, Nick Sewell and Byron Whackett while the lower order of Doug Moore, Declan Waters and Phil McElroy have added valuable runs on many occasions to turn mediocre totals into commanding ones.  My pick is a full strength Guyra to upset the Minor Premiers at Lambert Park in a boilover, despite Hillgrove only losing one game all year.

 2nd Grade Grand Final:  Hillgrove v. Guyra at Lambert Park, Saturday 1:15 - 5:30 & Sunday 10:00 - 5.30.

In 3rd grade, St Kilda got back on track with a comfortable outright victory over Hillgrove to set up a chance to atone for the loss to Guyra in the Major Semi-Final with a replay in the Grand Final.  St Kilda bowled out Hillgrove for 92 with Jacob Davies (3/24) and Tim Muir (3/23) leading the charge, but their batting has tapered off recently and Bob Kirk (6/35) showed once again that they are suceptible to good swing bowling as they were bowled out for 142.  Hillgrove put up a good fight in the second innings, making 136 led by Adam Croft (37) and Aaron Whackett (35) with Nick Levy taking 4/33, but it was not enough as Kilda comfortably chased down the runs for the loss of just 2 wickets.

The 3rd grade Grand Final promises to be an interesting one, as Jason Rolff's 8/42 destroyed St Kilda last time, but with batsmen of the calibre of Matt Munzenrieder, Nick Levy, Mick Bishop and Justin Northam all scoring over 200 runs for the season, the chances are one of them will fire.  They will be well backed up by the outstanding bowling of Jacob Davies (41 wickets at 5.1) who has taken 26 wickets since Christmas, Nick Levy and Tim Muir (14 wickets in 4 games).  They look too strong on paper for a Guyra team relying on Bruce Coppock, Jack Kliendienst and Kyle Taylor, though BJ Kliendienst (18 wickets since Christmas) and Rolff have found a nice groove.  Fortunately, Grand Finals are not played on paper, and this game at Harris Park should be another good one.

 3rd Grade Grand Final:  Guyra v. St Kilda at Harris Park, Saturday 1:15 - 5:30 & Sunday 10:00 - 5.30.

In 4th grade, Charles Rao kept on keeping on, scoring another unbeaten half century to take his total to 314 from 7 innings as Servies proved too strong for St Kilda.  Servies have been no one man team, though, with a bowling attack led by Cameron Gall and John Elliot  (3/11) and supported by spinner Fraser Yule (3/25) had St Kilda in all sorts at 6/31 before Wayne Bishop (50 ret.) added some respectablility with a typical hard hitting knock to help his side to 133.  It was never going to be enough, though, as Servies, despite the early loss of Elliot and Nathan Withnell, cruised to a 6 wicket win thanks to Rao (52 ret.), Cody Graham (22) and a quickfire 30 no from Ron Dennison to continue an unbeaten run since January and set up a Grand Final at Jack Vallance Oval against Hillgrove - who have teams in 3 of the 4 deciders and can be justifiably proud of their Club's strength throughout the Grades.

Hillgrove's batting will be led by Scott and Mick Brennan and Hugh and Ian Reeves rounding out their father and son batting order.  They will likely be boosted by the return from 3rd grade of Michael Dawson, who scored heavily in 4ths earlier in the season before being called up to 3rds.  Hillgrove's bowling attack looks a little thin, relying heavily on Hugh Reeves, Reece Cropper and spinner Mathew Bindley and it will be a case of whether the early season favourites Hillgrove can find their form against the Servies juggernaut that has taken all before it since Christmas.  Not the slightest bias here in backing Servies to bring home the bacon, but they must be wary of the 'Groves veterans pulling out all the stops.

4th Grade Grand Final:  Hillgrove v. Ex-Services at Jack Vallance Oval (Elizabeth Park 1), One Day Match on Saturday from 1:15 pm

Hillgrove Through to Final Despite Tie With Guyra

2nd Grade provided the game of the round as the Major Semi Final between first placed Hillgrove and second placed Guyra ended in a sensational tie.  Batting first, Hillgrove put on a solid 189 led by Blair Chalmers (39) and backed up by lower order contributions from Doug Moore (36 no) and Phil McElroy (33 & 4/41).  In the process, though, they had to overcome a resurgent Mitch Woods (6/46), who turned back the clock with a tremendous spell of quick bowling (and felt it the next day) to rattle the Hillgrove middle order as they went from 3/97 to 8/109 thanks to his bowling. In reply, Gurya were in some bother until Tom Skipper (85) and Matt Jackson (46) got together to build a  big 4th wicket partnership and looked set to be first into the Grand Final, but Hillgrove hung in, and broke the partnership when Jackson was stumped off Declan Waters and stole the game when Justin McKay was caught and bowled off Phil McElroy searching for the winning run as the match ended in a dramatic tie.  Hillgrove advance to the Grand Final due to their higher place on the table after a cracker of a game!

The Minor Semi Final between Easts and Servies saw Servies struggle to score on a damp Wicklow pitch on the first day and be bowled out for 83 against an accurate Easts attack led by Mick Schatz (4/14).  Tony Butler (23) and David Dunlop (20) battled hard for Servies.  Easts survived 5 overs to be 0/17 at the end of the first day and despite losing early wickets on the second day, found a good partnership between Alex Thomas (52 no) and Will Frost (30 & 3/18) to steer them to victory as the sun came out and they cruised to 5/134 and book a place against Guyra in next week's Preliminary Final with the winner to take on Hillgrove in the Grand Final.

In 3rd Grade, the Major Semi Final saw an upset as Jason Rolff (8/42) demolished St Kilda to take the Rock of the Round as they were bowled out for 98, despite Mick Bishop's 44.  Guyra comfortably chased down the total and established a big lead at 5/138 with Jack Kliendienst (2/17 & 56) leading the way.  Tim Muir (4/29) toiled hard to take 4 of the 5 wickets to fall.  Rain prevented play on the second day as St Kilda accepted the inevitable defeat, comfortable in the knowledge of another game next week against Hillgrove, who were to strong for TAS.

Hillgrove put on 8/164 with Adam Partridge (32), Michael Dawson (32) and Mick Sharman (31) setting a defendable total.  TAS were in trouble early as Matt Tremayne (4/34) took out both openers and then had their middle order destroyed by Bob Kirk (5/9), before Jamie Wood (2/31 & 22 no) fought hard to keep them in the game.  It was all to no avail, though, as Tremayne took the final wicket at 122 to assure a 42 run win and the opportunity to take on a stung St Kilda in next week's Preliminary Final, with the winner to face Guyra in the Grand Final.

Servies 4th grade advanced to the Preliminary Final to play St Kilda after a 85 run victory over Guyra.  Once again, Servies were led by Charlie Rao (52 ret.) who received great support from John Elliot (26 & 2/21) and Glen Moult (25 no) as Servies piled on 5/197.  In reply, Guyra were bowled out for 112 despite the efforts of Peter Jackson (49), with Cameron Gall (3/7) leading the Servies attack.

In the other match, the Uralla Thunderbolts bushwacked competition leaders Hillgrove, putting on 186, led by John Eichorn (50 ret.), Brad Ritchie (39 & 2/26) and John Gallon (33).  In reply, young Scott Brennan (61) led the way, but lacked support as a Daniel Kelly (4/13) led attack bowled them out for 139.  It was a great win for Uralla, but came too late as they finished in 4th place with 3rd placed Servies to take on St Kilda in next week's Preliminary Final and the winner to take on Hillgrove in the 4th Grade Grand Final on the following Saturday.

In 1st grade, with only 4 teams, this weekend's Saturday-Sunday round provided a final chance for City to make the Finals with an outright win over Servies.  They started their mission well against an undermanned Servies side by scoring 6/228 led by Doug Harris (97), the Grafton Representative side captain, who breezed into town and took out the Willow Wielder of the Week in a powerhouse knock that included 15 fours and 3 sixes and stirred considerable controversy.  Harris received great support from Andrew Brownlie (59).  Servies could only blame themselves as they could only muster 9 players, not wanting to take players from 2nd and 4th grade who were both playing elimination games, and they were bowled out for 8/110 in the first innings, despite the efforts of Tom Model (38) and Josh Smith (31) as Steve Butler took 3/27.  Things went further downhill in the 2nd innings as Servies were rolled for 8/93 despite Luke Brown (3/68 & 69 no), who carried his bat in an otherwise limp batting effort for a team wanting to be in the Finals, but who lost 16 wickets for 213 as their batting woes continued.

Easts proved too strong for Hillgrove in a less controversial encounter at the Sportsground.  Batting first, Hillgrove struggled to 152 led by Matt Schaeffer (41) and Brad King (25) but fell victim to Brad Schumacher (7/77 off 26 overs).  Easts comfortably chased down the total for the loss of just 4 wickets as Dean Moore (37) provided a solid opening and Alex Frost (54 no) showed his excellent temperament in big games.  Nathan Porter (38) continued his excellent form and is fast becoming more useful to Easts as a batsman than a bowler.  The win gave Easts the Minor Premiership and a free ride to the Grand Final, while Hillgrove will take on City in the Preliminary Final next week.

Cricket Finals the Talk of the Town

The Armidale cricket community is abuzz with Finals plans and dreams as the Armidale District Cricket Competition has reached the pointy end of the season.  Its moving time in all grades with 2nds and 3rds playing Semi's this Saturday and Sunday and 1sts and 4ths playing their last competition round with finals spots not assured grabs in either grade.

Servies 4th Grade had a comfortable 60 run win over St Kilda at Elizabeth Park and are really on a roll.  Led by batsman, Charlie Rao (52 ret.), who notched up his 3rd half century and supported by Cameron Gall (20 no & 3/14) they easily outclassed St Kilda despite the efforts of Nathan Street (3/27) and are looking like dark horses for the Finals after defeating all their opponents in the last month.  Meanwhile, Guyra got over the top of Uralla, bowling them out for 100 with Josiah Stace (3/21) the best with the ball.  Uralla made them fight though, taking 8 wickets before conceding defeat.  Alex Moir was the best for Uralla with 3/25, while Ben Stace top scored with 32 for Guyra.

In 3rd Grade, St Kilda put on another dominant display to take 1st innings points of Hillgrove on day 1, before weather prevented their hopes of an outright.  St Kilda piled on 247 & 143 and bowled Hillgrove out for 78 to secure 1st innings points and had Hillgrove at 2/38 at the end of day 1.  Best with the bat for St Kilda were Geoff Maxwell (64), Steve Davies (50) and Ken Kelly with 49 in their 2nd dig, while Jacob Davies (5/14) tore Hillgrove apart with the ball.  Paul Wright (4/46) did the damage for Hillgrove in the first inning and Bob Kirk (5/35) did the job in the 2nd.

Guyra demolished Centrals by an innings and 164 runs to set up a cracker of a Major Semi-Final against St Kilda this weekend.  After bowling Centrals out for 44 with Jason Rolff (3/11 & 3/32) leading the way with the ball, Guyra piled on 7/286, led by Willow Wielder of the Week Kyle Taylor's big ton (120) and Jack Kliendienst (82).  They sent Centrals back in and bowled them out for 78 with Steve Brazier taking 3/1 in the 2nd dig to go with 2/11 in the first.

TAS secured a Finals match against 3rd placed Hillgrove after scoring a  big total of 286 against Easts.  They were superbly led by Toby Crothers (98) who fell in the nervous nineties and Harry Guest (64), while for Easts Henry Greenham (4/22), Ben Hanlon (3/43) and Adam Zirkler (3/73) gave their all.  After all the leather chasing, Easts struggled to hold an attacking TAS side and were dismissed for 84, but faired better in the 2nd dig, finishing at 5/108 despite Jamie Wood taking 3/23.

In 2nd Grade, Hillgrove escaped from 6/76 to put on 198 against Servies, despite the best efforts of Barry Lockwood (6/52) who took the Rock of the Round.  Opener Blair Chalmers (85) provided the big knock, but after the middle order collapsed, it was left to Jeremy Rowlings (37) and Declan Waters (26 no) to stage a recovery with Chalmers.  Asked to bat late on the first day, Servies collapsed to 4/34 at the close, thanks to Xavier Jetson (3/11).  Rain prevented any play on Day 2.

Meanwhile, City's hopes of a Finals berth were dashed when they were bowled out for 65 by Easts as Nick Ferris (4/26) and Steve Haydon (3/10) tore through them.  Easts moved to 7/117 in reply at the end of Day one, thanks to Alex Thomas (39) and Matt Trusswell (25), while Sam Constance (3/25) did his best to keep City in the game, however any hopes of an City fightback on Day 2 fell with the rain on Friday evening.

TAS were playing for pride against Guyra in Guyra and looked to have done themselves proud in compiling a competitive 202, led by Luke Webster (58), Matthew Wykniet (33) and Alan Moore (24 no).  Guyra, though, had little trouble chasing down the total and establishing a big lead as they posted 3/264 with Tom Skipper (100 no) scoring an unbeaten ton, and Troy Martin (78) and Mitch Wood (44) providing excellent support.  The win provided excellent batting practice for Guyra and sees them primed for the Major Semi Final against Hillgrove this weekend at Harris Park, while Easts play Servies in the Minor Semi Final at Rologas - these two teams tied last time they played, so a close game is expected.

In 1st Grade, Servies looked to be in trouble against Hillgrove after being bowled out for 96 at Harris Park with Matt Schaeffer taking 4/32, but they fought hard in the field and had Hillgrove at 7/90 at the end of the first day,  Rob Kelly (4/33) was the pick of Servies bowlers, while Matt Baillie (43) top scored for Hillgrove.  The match was interesting poised at the start of day 2, but the wet weather intervened and the points were split.

It was a similar story at the Sportsground, where Easts had recovered from 4/14 to post 221, thanks to the lusty hitting of Matt Foster (86) and able support of Luke Uphill (62) who broke through for his first 1st grade half century.  Andrew Skinner led the way for City with 3/41.  City were 2/14 in reply at the end of Day 1, and due to the rain, that's how it stayed.

The action really hots up this weekend, with 2 day games on Saturday and Sunday as 2nd & 3rd grade move into the Semi Finals and 1st grade play their last round with Easts and Hillgrove playing for the Minor Premiership and City clinging to the hope of sneaking into the finals with an outright win over Servies.  4th grade will play their last regular season game this Saturday with Servies (44 pts) travelling to Guyra (44pts) to battle for 3rd place and Uralla (42 pts) will hope for an upset over Hillgrove to sneak into the finals.  It promises to be a big weekend of local cricket.

Grove in Hanna's Shield Hat-trick

The final round of the Hanna's Shield One-Day Competition saw Hillgrove book themselves into the One Day Finals in the top 3 grades.  They will face Easts in 1st Grade, Guyra in 2nds and St Kilda in 3rds.  4th grade do not play in the Hanna's Shield as their competition is all one day matches.

The match of the round was an exciting tie between Easts and Servies in 2nd Grade, with Servies chasing down 8/131 from Easts only to lose their final wicket chasing the winning run.  Easts began their inning well, with Matt Frizell (29) and Will Frost (26) among the runs, but Servies fought back to prevent Easts building a big partnership.  Col Starkey (2/23) was the pick of the bowlers and was well supported by a very unlucky Barry Lockwood (0/33).  In reply, Servies were in big trouble at 6/35 before Andrew Bartik (55 no) and Tony Butler (30) put on 82 to take Servies 15 from victory with 2 overs to go.  Nails were bitten on both sides as Servies looked well positioned only to lose Tom Heffernan to a run out.  Steve Gray joined Bartik with 9 runs needed and just one wicket in hand.  Servies looked to have it won when they tied it up with 3 balls left, and then Gray lofted a drive over mid-off that looked like it might carry over the infield, but Will Frost, running back, took the catch to ensure that nothing separated these two teams on the day.

TAS sprung an upset on the previously undefeated Hillgrove, who may have had their minds on Tuesday.  Batting first, TAS scored an impressive 7/210, highlighted by a 97 run opening stand between Luke Webster (56 & 2/8) and Tom Armitage (53).  They then lost 3/0 before Caleb Dobos (43) lifted the tempo to see them through to 200 plus.

In reply, Hillgrove had both their openers back in the pavilion with only 2 runs on the board and despite a big effort from Nick Sewell (74 to go with 3/40) they were never in the hunt as first Cameron Patrick (3/10) and then younger brother Andrew (3/35) ripped through the middle and lower order to bowl them out for 132 in a win that liftedTAS and a loss that might come at just the right time for Hillgrove to sharpen them up for Tuesday's One Day Final against Guyra.

Guyra did not have it all their own way against an improving Centrals.  They would have felt fairly comfortable after holding Centrals to 129 with Gary Davison (28) the top scorer.  Charles White (6/22 & 30 no) made a huge impact in his first game of the season to take the Rock of the Round and then bat together with Kyle Taylor (38 no) to steer Guyra home after they had slumped to 7/75 thanks to the wiles of Will Green (3/31).

In 3rd grade. Guyra needed to win and see either Hillgrove or St Kilda lose to make the Final, and they did their part by crushing Easts by 135 runs at Moran Oval.  They put on 186 with a number of useful contribution highlighted by Jack Kliendienst (38) and Bruce Coppock (36), but were held back by first Adam Rossa (3/25) and then Matt Swain (4/20).  Easts were never in the hunt in reply, losing wickets at regular intervals to be dismissed for 51, with only Dean Smith (19) reaching double figures.  Jason Rolff (4/16) and BJ Kliendienst (3/21) doing the bulk of the damage.

St Kilda, though, booked their One Day Final place with a comfortable 7 wicket win over TAS, bowling them out for 84 thanks to Jacob Davies (3/8) and Matt Munzenrieder (3/16), while Alan Moore (31) top scored for TAS.  It was never going to be enough against the strong St Kilda batting line-up and they barely moved out of second gear, cruising to 3/91 despite the efforts of Callum James (2/42).

Guyra were oh so close to a Final, as Centrals really took it up to Hillgrove at Newling 1.  Hillgrove put on a respectable 4/157 with Peter Townsend (46 no) and Mat Croft (31 no) putting on an unbeaten 73 for the 5th wicket.  Centrals took up the challenge though, with opener Gary Quinlan (45) and 1st drop Warren Kelly (55) putting them in a strong position at 3/135 before a brilliant spell from Mick Sharman (5/10) tore them apart. Together with Shaun Brennan (2/9) they made Centrals lose an astonishing 6/4 to slump to 9/139, and despite the best efforts of Ray Cundy (6 no) they fell just 7 runs short, bowled out for 150.

In 4th grade, St Kilda proved too strong for Guyra, scoring a strong 7/210 highlighted by Terry Johnson (51 ret. & 3/15) who lifted his average above 100 after 3 games, and Rick Sutherland (32).  Shane Davidson (2/16) was the best of the Guyra attack.  Guyra began well with Mat Simpson (21), Josiah Stace (22) and Nick Burey (20) all making starts, but at 1/60 they lost 4/4 to the bowling of Stephen Gordon (20 no & 3/18) and Johnson and fell away to be bowled out for 100.  Servies forfeited to Hillgrove in the other 4th grade game and another forfeit could see them out of the competition.

In 1st grade, Hillgrove ensured a hatrick of Hanna's Shield Final appearances with a convincing win over Servies.  Batting first, they turned a reasonable score at 6/131 into a dominating one at 7/217 thanks to lusty late over hitting from Mitch Moore (55 no) and Bentley Cropper (35 & 3/27) after Adam O'Sullivan (51) had laid the platform.  In reply, Jay Wright (26) started the big chase in style hitting Baillie's 2nd ball for 4 and attacking the bowling, but when he was caught in the deep off Matt Schaeffer and Luke Brown went three runs later, they lost momentum and failed to build a major partnership to be dismissed for 117.

Easts go into the Hanna's Shield Final unbeaten in one-dayers this season after they comfortably defeated City by 68 runs at the Sportsground.  Easts can thank Alex Frost (49 no) for their competitive total and they can thank Joe Horneman (5/20) for their comfortable margin. Horneman finally had the luck after bowling well all season, rattling through the top order to have City at 7/43 after they lost 4/0 to be dismissed for 71.

This weekend see the recommencement of 2 day games in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, but for those lacking the patience for the longer game (or longing for a little more action) the 20/20 comp begins next Friday (February 5) at the Sportsground with 2 games each Friday from 5 pm -10 pm, with new teams drawn from the biggest hitters across the Clubs in 1st and 2nd grades.

Davies Hat-trick Best In Bowlers' Weekend.

The recommencement of the Armidale District Cricket Competition saw St Kilda's Jacob Davies take the first hattrick of the season and the Rock of the Round as his 3rd Grade team demolished Centrals by 158 runs to keep up their excellent form from last year.  Batting first, St Kilda scored 7/209 with Nick Levy top-scoring with 70 and Justin Northam providing good support with 47.  In reply, Jacob Davies (6/16) tore through the Centrals line-up as they lost 6/0 to be dismissed for 51, with only Barker and Mick Mather reaching double figures.

In other 3rd grade games, Guyra and Hillgrove ended up tied in their game at Guyra with after the home side scored 8/166 with Hillgrove's Matt Tremayne (3/28) and Xavier Jetson (2/22) doing the damage before Jetson backed up with 67 opening for the 'Grove.  Hillgrove looked to have it won as Aaron Whackett (41) provided good support, but Steve Brazier (2/28), and Laurie Smith (2/27)   held them up as Tremayne (22) and Mick Sharman pushed for victory before BJ Kliendienst (2/27) had Tremayne caught and bowled and Aaron Gallagher was run out.  After some confusion over the scorebooks, both teams agreed to share the points.

TAS proved too strong for Easts at TAS, with TAS recovering from 3/9 with Harry Guest (97 no) and Alan Moore (58) putting on 148 for the 4th wicket and setting up a total of 4/206 with Guest desperately close to a sensational century to be the Willow Wielder of the Week.  In reply, Easts' Jamie Vesey (76) and Ben Hanlon (49) put on 101 for the 4th wicket but found little support as they were held to 8/155 thanks to the bowling of Marcus Laurie (3/28) and Angus Sutherland (3/34).

In 4th Grade, Guyra went down to Hillgrove at Elizabeth Park.  Batting first, Guyra were held to 136 with Matthew Bindley (5/41) taking a Michelle with his offies.  In reply, Hillgrove were in trouble at 2/4 with Josiah Stace (3/27) doing the early damage, and were made to fight all the way, despite Ian Reeves 53 retired, they needed all their batsmen with Jock Morgan hitting the winning run with 9 wickets down.

In the other game, Uralla proved too strong for St Kilda at Newling 1.  Uralla scored 8/170  with Corbin Kelly (30) top-scoring.  In reply, St Kilda were bowled out for 145 with Aiden Pugh (45 and 2/21) top-scoring.  The Kelly Gang did the damage for Uralla, with Corbin Kelly (3/6) and Daniel Kelly (3/13) doing the bulk of the damage.

In 2nd Grade, Guyra proved too strong for City at Rologas, winning by 60 runs.  Guyra won the toss and struggled against some accurate bowling until Matt Jackson (56 no) found enough support to get a defendable total on the board.  Rod Watson (3/24) was the pick of City's good attack.  In reply, City struggled against some accurate bowling from the Mountain Men to be dismissed in the 33rd over for 96.  Mitch Woods (3/13) was the pick of a very good attack for Guyra.

TAS defeated Centrals by 10 runs in a close game at TAS.  Batting first, TAS were dismissed for 145 with B Cutmore taking 4/35 while Luke Webster top-scored with 58.  In reply, Tim Williams (3/24) had Centrals in early trouble at 2/10, but they recovered to be 4/96 before losing 6/39 to be dismissed for 135.

Hillgrove defeated Easts in a low-scoring game at Harris Park.  Batting first, Hillgrove were looking good as Blair Chalmers (27) and Byron Whackett (25) put on a 54 run opening stand, but from here they lost wicket at regular intervals as Matt Swain (6/13) destroyed their lower order to bowl them out for 109.  In reply, Easts were looking comfortable at 3/72 before Declan Waters (5/23) struck, taking the key wicket of Lachlan Paull (42)     and with good support from Doug Moore (2/13) they skittled Easts, who lost 7/30 to be dismissed just for 102, just 8 runs from victory with Hillgrove keeping up their unbeaten run.

In 1st Grade, Easts chased down 8/164 from Hillgrove with 2 wickets in hand at the Sportsground, with Matt Foster top scoring with 62, while Brad King (3/26) and Mitch Moore (3/40) were the best of the Hillgrove bowlers.  Accurate bowling from Easts had earlier held Hillgrove back with regular breakthroughs preventing big partnerships building.

Servies won their second game in a row by defeating City by 100 runs at Lambert Park.  Batting first, Servies scored 149 thanks to a good partnership between Rob Kelly (27) and Tom Model (14).  In reply, City were never really in the hunt against a very accurate attack led by Captain Luke Brown (3/23), Rob Kelly (2/22)  and Alistair Doyle (2/6) to be skittled for just 49.

Round 3 of the Hanna's One Day Competition of Armidale Cricket saw Friday afternoon's downpour wash out half of the games for the last round before the Christmas break, however the weather did not prevent Servies 1st grade springing an upset on Hillgrove. Servies, who had not tasted victory this season, won the toss and sent the 'Grove in at Harris Park and with Luke Brown (4/22) and Brad Widders (2/18) doing the early damage and Tom Model (2/20) chipping in they bowled them out for 72 in 27 overs. In reply, Hillgrove made early breakthroughs with the wickets of Angus Newey and Jay Wright, but Liam Smith (50 no) and Brad Dunham (12 no) saw them cruise to an easy win that was very pleasing for Servies Captain Brad Widders. "The wicket actually played really well, but we have been working on bowling good line and length and its starting to pay off in games. I was really happy with Liam Smith's return to form and I'm sure his half century can turn his season around."
In 4th grade, Guyra proved too strong for Servies at home, scoring 177 thanks to Matthew Mason (51 retired) and Josiah Stace (40 & 2/1 with the ball) before bowling Servies out for 110. Sam Ferris was the best for Servies with 2/15 and 26 runs, while Sam Watson scored 25.
Hillgrove had an easy win over Uralla, restricting them to 8/106 with J Kelly (50 ret.) and Colvin Williams (43) the only run scorers. Hugh Reeves (4/2) was the pick of a good attack. Hillgrove had little trouble chasing down the total for the loss of just 4 wickets with Michael Dawson (53 no) going from strength to strength with the bat.
In 3rd and 2nd grades, only Centrals and Hillgrove got on the field with the weather washing out St Kilda v Easts and TAS v Guyra in 3rds and Guyra v Servies and City v. TAS in 2nds. The 3rd grade game proved to be a comfortable win for Hillgrove after they bowled out Centrals for 110 thanks to Aaron Gallagher (3/18) and Mick Sharman (3/26) and chased down the total with 8 wickets in hand thanks to Aaron Whackett's 42.
In 2nds, though, Centrals gave Hillgrove a sterner test, setting 143 on the back of Scott Cutmore's dominant 54 with good support from Clarrie Moran (30) and Cam Mundy (28 & 2/26). Hillgrove's Declan Waters taking 4/17 in another good outing for the young leg spinner. In reply Hillgrove were cruising early thanks to Blair Chalmers (28), Nick Sewell (27) and Ben Marshall (44), but were held back by the bowling of Jason Boland (3/21) and Will Green (2/22) and it was left to the bowlers to get them home with just 2 wickets to spare.
In the other 1st grade game, City set a competitive 5/163 at the Sportsground against Easts with Steve Butler (57) and Christian Gerard (28) putting on 74 for the first wicket and Andrew Brownlie boosting his average with 49 not out. Easts replied with 53 from their openers Dean Moore (48) and James Piddington (25) before Lachlan Fulloon (30) and Matt Preston (30 no) saw them home.
The ADCA has announced that the new lighting at the Sportsground will be officially opened on Tueday January 12 with a Golden Oldies match from 3pm followed by a Easts v Hillgrove match under lights to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. More details to come on this fun event for a very worthy cause.

Brennan’s 6/4 Shuts Down City

The second round of the Hanna’s Shield One-Day competition of the Armidale District Cricket Association saw City cruising at 5/90 before Shaun Brennan took apart their lower order in just 14 deliveries to take 6/4 and take out the Rock of the Round.  Brennan’s short but devastating spell saw City collapse to be all out for 101.  Easts had little trouble chasing down the total with 7 wickets in hand.

Servies 4th grade continued their improvement as they took the game right up to St Kilda at Elizabeth Park.  Batting first, Servies scored 6/182 with Warren Bartik (50 ret.) finding great support from Glen Moult (40) and Terry Whale (28 & 2/23).  They bowled more tightly and took 7 St Kilda wickets, but old-stagers Brian “Mugsy” Mullen (53 ret.) and Nathan Street (50 ret.) proved the difference as St. Kilda notched another win.

In the other 4th grade game, Guyra made the trip down the hill to Uralla worthwhile as they scored 7/195 before bowling Uralla out for 126.  Best for Guyra was Nick Burey with 49 runs and 2/13, while for Uralla, Jay Grills took 2/37 and top-scored with 27.

In 3rd Grade, St Kilda proved too strong for Hillgrove, bowling them out for 97 with Tim Moir taking a very impressive 5/9 off his 8 overs and Mick Brennan (50) scoring more than half the runs for Hillgrove.  In reply, St Kilda cruised to 3/106 with Steve Bishop scoring 54.

Centrals went up the Pinch to Guyra, but came home empty handed as they were bowled out for 96 with Jack Kliendienst taking 4/18.  Guyra lost only 2 wickets in the chase with Bruce Coppock unbeaten on 56 and Steve Brazier (37) keeping up his good form.  In the other 3rd grade game, TAS won by forfeit over City.

In the Crossover game, Centrals 2nds proved too strong for Easts 3rds, scoring 8/128 with Clarrie Moran 38no, despite Adam Rossa taking 4/35.  They then rolled Easts 3rds for just 50, with Cameron Mundy (4/11) and Jason Boland (3/30) dismantling the top order, and Phil Allen’s offies wrapping up the tail with 3/1.  Only Jamie Vesey (25) offered any resistance.

In 2nd Grade, TAS gave Guyra a run for their money at TAS backfield.  TAS struggled to 123 thanks mainly to Luke Webster’s 64. James Sharpe (3/26) and Matt Jackson (3/19) doing the damage, Guyra looked comfortably placed at the halfway point, but TAS didn’t give up, taking wickets at regular intervals, led by Andrew Patrick (3/29).  Guyra struggled to find a big partnership, but TAS never had enough to defend on the small ground and Guyra got home with 3 wickets in hand.

Servies gave the unbeaten Hillgrove an early shock when Tom Heffernan took a wicket with the first ball of the innings and had Hillgrove at 3/7.  It could have been 4/8 if Sam Watson had held a difficult chance at mid-on, but Hillgrove steadied as Ben Marshall (49) and Byron Whackett (57) put together 96 for the 4th wicket and Hillgrove rallied to 7/174 off their 40 overs, despite Steve Gray’s 4/24. In reply, Servies started well, but fell away to be dismissed for 115 with Doug Moore (3/23) taking care of the middle order and Declan Waters (3/13) taking the tail.

In 1st grade, Servies scored a competitive 9/163 with opener Jay Wright (51) notching his first half-century of the season and Will Model (36) continuing his good recent form in the middle order.  Joe Horneman (2/22) was the pick of Easts bowling.  Servies rued their dropped chances in the chase, as they put down James Piddington (72) a number of times.  Aaron Fleming (39) provided good support, while Luke Brown (2/28) was the best of the Servies attack.

At Lambert Park, Hillgrove had a comfortable win over City, with City collapsing from 4/111 to be all out for 141, with Andrew Skinner (52 & 3/28) starring with both bat and ball.  Mitch Moore (3/37 & 24no) kept up his happy knack of taking wickets for Hillgrove.  Hillgrove lost 6 wickets in chasing down the total, with Adam O’Sullivan (41) the best of a number of contributions.  The match was notable as the first time Hillgrove have not had the services of Mick Schaeffer, and as the first time since Round 1 that they have not scored at least 40 for the first wicket.

This weekend sees the last round of One-Day matches before the Christmas break, with games to recommence on January 9, 2010.

Rowlings Unbeaten Century for Hillgrove 2nds

The first round of the Hanna's Shield One-Day competition saw Servies 4th grade give competition leaders Hillgrove a real scare in a low scoring game at Newling 2.  Hillgrove would have been feeling confident after dismissing Servies for 72 with Reece Cropper taking 3/12 and Harrison Dickson taking 3/19, but Servies had learnt a lot from their loss to Uralla last weekend and kept the ball up with opening bowlers Cameron Gall (4/8) and John Elliot (2/18) having Hillgrove at 2/1 despite a 9 man field.  Hillgrove struggled against some accurate bowling, but got home thanks to Jock Morgan's 37 with just 2 wickets to spare.

In 3rd grade, Guyra proved too strong for Easts, scoring 9/203 with Steve Brazier (45) and Laurie Smith (40) starring with the bat.  Daniel Connor (3/28) and Adam Zirkler (3/33) were the pick of Easts bowlers.  Easts were bowled out for 132 in reply, despite a half century from opener Jamie Vesey (50) before he was run out.  BJ Kliendienst (3/21) did the early damage and Zac Aitkin (5/4) was devastating in mopping up the tail to take the Golden Rock of the Round for best bowling in all grades.

TAS were restricted to 166 by Hillgrove 3rds at TAS Backfield, despite a half-century opening stand from J Armstrong (46) and Tom Walsh (39), who backed up to take 3 of the 4 wickets to fall for Hillgrove as they comfortably chased down the total.  Michael Dawson (47) handled the promotion from 4ths and the year 8 student looks a promising young batsmen.

In the Crossover game, Hillgrove 2nds proved too strong for an undermanned St Kilda 3rds, with Jeremy Rowlings winning the Willow Wielder of the Week by making an unbeaten 100 out of Hillgrove's 190.  Nick Levy was again accurate taking 3/7 for St. Kilda 3rds.  St Kilda were bowled out for 85 in reply with Doug Moore (3/21) the pick of the bowlers.

In 2nd Grade, Servies proved too strong for TAS, defending 134 to bowl TAS out for 117.  A couple of good all-round performances from Luke Webster (3/19 & 41) and David Dunlop (41 & 2/20) while Jared Graham's spell of 6 overs 1/10 proved pivotal in turning a low scoring match.

City easily accounted for Centrals on the back of a strong batting performance at Rologas.  They scored 211 led by Ben Rankmore (49) and Josh Patrick (45 no) with Jason Boland (4/22) keeping them honest.  Centrals were never really in the hunt in reply, with Brett Mowle (4/14) and Patrick (2/27) taking the early wickets before Joe Ninnes (4/21) rapped up the tail in just 19 overs to bowl Centrals out for 77.

Guyra recovered from a devastating early spell from Nick Ferris (5/29) to score 7/182 thanks to Tom Skipper (96) and the two Matts, Jackson (36) and Bull (19 no) who were the only Guyra batsmen to reach double figures.  Matt Bull (3/8) and Justin McKay (3/18) had East reeling in reply at 3/9 and they never recovered, to be bowled out for 82.  The St Kilda-Guyra match 4th Grade match was unfortunately forfeited by St Kilda due to yet another wedding.

In 1st Grade, Easts got over the top of a depleted Hillgrove by 25 runs in a low scoring game at the Sportsground, with the middle order of Frost, Preston and Foster providing the bulk of the runs.  Brad King (3/16) the best with the ball for Hillgrove.  In reply, Hillgrove started strongly, as they have all year, with the Schaeffer brothers taking the score to 46 before Nathan Porter broke through.  Hillgrove's young guns didn't follow up though and after Mick Schaeffer fell for 32, they lost 8-63 to be bowled out for 134, with Brad Schumacher's 3/12 the pick of the bowling.

In the other first grade game, City cruised to a comfortable win over Servies.  Batting first, they scored 4/197 thanks to Andrew Brownlie (82) and some wayward bowling (22 wides for Servies) as X. Tras was second highest scorer with 38.  Servies lost a wicket in the first over in reply and struggled to build meaningful partnerships to be bowled out for 127, with only Will Model (38) putting together an innings of note.  Adam Murrell (2/31) did the early damage, Zac Kelsey (3/33) took care of the middle order and Steve Butler (3/24) wrapped up the tail.

Paull's 11/37 Rocks Servies

East 2nd grade took a comfortable 9 wicket outright win over Servies thanks to the accurate and destructive bowling of Lachlan Paull, who followed up his 5/20 last weekend with 6/17 to roll Servies for 84 and leave his side chasing just 20 runs in the 2nd inning.  In just 13.3 overs he singlehandedly destroyed Servies hopes of building a defendable total in the best match performance by a bowler this season.

Hillgrove confirmed its place as the Club to beat this season, topping the table in 1sts, 2nds and 4ths as their 2nds side held off an Andrew Patrick led charge from TAS thanks to Adam Baillie (4/32) and Andy Brown (4/36).  Patrick took 2/48 in Hillgrove's 216 last weekend and followed up with 78 runs as TAS got to 183 before Baillie took the last 3 wickets.

Meanwhile, Guyra 2nds moved to the third on the table and fell just 10 runs short of outright victory in a high scoring game at Harris Park.  Centrals were held to 152 in the first innings thanks to Fred Keeping (4/31) and Matt Bull (4/43).  Guyra piled on  284 runs in reply, led by opener Troy Martin's 64 and a welcome return from Mitch Woods (54).  Fred Waters (4/61) and Brad Rafferty (3/75) the pick of Centrals attack.  In the Centrals 2nd innings a number of good contributions got them to 198, leaving Guyra chasing 77 for the outright win.  Despite an aggressive 39no from Kyle Taylor, though, Guyra ran out of time at 1/65.

In the crossover game, Guyra 3rds took a first innings lead off City 2nds, before City rallied to take the outright win.  Guyra scored 206 with Steven Brazier (44) leading the way.  Joe Ninnes continued his good form taking 3/48.  City 2nds replied positively to be 1/88 when Michael Allen fell for 51, but were held back by Laurie Smith (4.27) and BJ Kliendienst (3/46) to be dismissed for 175.  Guyra struggled in its second dig with only Mark Aitkin (42) reaching double figures as they were rolled for 82 as Brett Mowle found his mojo to take 5/38, leaving City needing 113 for the outright.  They did it easily as Dave Farmer (41no) and Ben Rankmore (31 no) saw them home with 2 wickets down.

In 4th Grade, Hillgrove won their top of the table clash with St Kilda after posting a strong 4/230 off their 40 overs.  Youngster Michael Dawson confirmed his promise with a well compiled 58 before being run out.  Earlier Mick Brennan (53 ret.) and Hugh Reeves (37) laid the platform with an 88 run opening partnership.  St Kilda were valiant in reply. but lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 172, with Hugh Dell (41) keeping up his good form.  Matthew Bindley's off-spin producing 3/33 for Hillgrove.

In the other 4th grade match, Servies set Uralla a chase of 172 after Warren Bartik (41) led the way.  Sam Townsend was the pick of the Uralla bowlers with 3/0 off 5 overs to rip apart the middle order.  In reply, Jack Ainsworth (87) made short work of the Servies attack on the small ground.  Servies bowlers could find nowhere to hide as he hit 12 fours and 6 sixes before falling just 10 runs short of victory.

In 3rd grade, we must begin with a retraction to Easts 3rds who only forfeited their match to City 3rds due to the weddings of Gavin Nelson and Shaun Brennan occuring on the same day and leading to 13 players being unavailable on the day.  Congratulations to both these fine cricketers and their wives and my apologies for the not getting the facts right.  I only know what I am told.  Speaking of which, I know that St Kilda 3rds will be forfeiting this week in their crossover match against Hillgrove 2nds due to a wedding in their Club.  Who organises a wedding at the same time as a cricket match? Must be something in the water.

St Kilda strengthened their hold at the top of 3rd grade completing an easy outright win over TAS, bowling them out for 34 in the 2nd innings after knocking them over for 67 last weekend before scoring 5/272. Young Jacob Davies continued his good form with the ball taking 4/4 in the 2nd innings to take 8/14 for the match.

Hillgrove 3rds secured 3rd place on the table with the outright win over Centrals 3rds last weekend.

In 1st grade, Hillgrove stayed 3 points clear at the top of the table despite only taking 1st innings points off Servies, who were dismissed for 122 thanks to Andrew Curry's 5/22 to move him 17 wickets at 8.9 as the highest wicket taker in all grades.

Easts closed the gap on Hillgrove with an emphatic win over City, eclipsing City's 209 with just three wickets down and eventually declaring at 5/273, with Lachlan Fulloon notching another century with 104.  Alex Thomas could not build on last weekend, falling for 56.  City looked to put the match beyond Easts reach with Angus Reckord leading the way with 55, but Brad Schumacher had other ideas and took 4/32 to skittle a shortened line-up for 123.  This left East needing 59 for the outright win with time running out, however Fulloon (23 no) took off where he left off in the 1st innings and when he was joined by Matt Foster it was over very quickly.  Foster (32no) clubbed 3 fours and 2 sixes to gallop to the win in just 4.2 overs with 9 wickets in hand.

Congratulations to Servies Cricket Club who raised a lot of smiles and over $500 through their Movember appeal.  Thanks also for the informative booklet on men's health.

Are St Kilda Too Strong for 3rd Grade?

This is the question that must be on the lips of the Gradings Committee of the Armidale District Cricket Association after St Kilda again dominated on the first day of their clash with TAS at Wakefield.  They bowled out TAS for 67 with young Jacob Davies taking 4/10 to move to second highest wicket taker in the grade, then they piled on 5/310 off just 37 overs with Mick Bishop following up his 124 last weekend with 90 and Justin Northam moved his average to 100 with 55no.  St Kilda now have 4 of the top 5 batsmen in 3rd grade, who have scored 768 runs between them in just 4 games and look ready to move up a grade.  Nick Levy, in particular, has scored 209 runs at 104.5 and taken 9/85 with the ball and sounds like a class player.

Meanwhile, St Kilda 4ths put paid to Uralla despite Alex Moir (50) and Jay Grills (52) taking the Thunderbolts to 190.  'Governor' Wayne Bishop took 5/29.  St Kilda had little trouble chasing down the total, though, scoring 3/209 with Brian Mullen (50 ret.) and Hugh Dell (40) opening with 92 and Jake Caldwell (77) seeing them home.

In the other 4th grade game, Hillgrove Colts chased down 127 from Guyra  (Terry Williams 40) thanks to a fine innings from youngster Michael Dawson (45) who fell just short of victory.  Servies had the bye, but face Uralla this weekend, while St. Kilda take on Hillgrove at Newling 1.

In 3rd grade, Hillgrove look the most likely to challenge St Kilda after they took outright points and earned a weekend off by knocking over a struggling Centrals for 40 & 34 and scored 4 dec./176 in between times.  Matt Teege enjoyed a return to grade cricket to score 85 and The Express's Matt McLennan took 3/16 in the 2nd innings.  Elsewhere, City took the points over Easts by forfeit in a concerning situation for last year's premiers.

The Crossover game saw Guyra 3rds throw down the gauntlet to City 2nds, scoring 204 at home, despite Joe Ninnes 3/48 with the ball.  City 2nds replied well to be 4/120 at stumps with Michael Allen completing a nice double, taking 3/13 for City and backing up to score 51.

In 2nd Grade, Hillgrove are in a strong position over TAS after the first day. They batted first and scored 216 thanks to Sam Sewell (57) and Tom Prosser (48) who is showing real consistency to be the leading run scorer in 2nds .  TAS lost 2 wickets in reply to be 2/20 at stumps, but still have some quality batsmen to come.

Servies struggled against Easts at Rologas, to be bowled out for 55 with Easts Lachlan Paull mopping up with 5/20 and Steve Hayden tight and accurate with  2/8 Easts looked to be cruising to a big first innings lead at 1/72, but Servies fought back with Alistair Doyle taking 3/19, Tom Heffernan 3/23 and Baz Lockwood 2/13 to bowl out Easts for 125 and give themselves a sniff of a chance next week.  No score was available for the game between Centrals and Guyra.

In the big league, Hillgrove started well early against Servies thanks to Mick Shaeffer (63), but Servies fought back to have them at 7/178 before Warwick Brown (101no) wound back the clock to his glory days and Hillgrove surged away to score 8/342.  Servies will relish the better batting conditions at the Sportsground next week and did score 201 last time they played Hillgrove, but they will need some of their big names to start producing if they are to stand any chance this season.

City compiled a solid 209 against Easts at Lambert Park as young Hugh Reckord (72) filled in very well for his missing brother Angus and offered a tantalizing prospect if this pair get in together at the crease.  Reckord was well supported by Nick Ada (62), but their was little other support as Matt House (3/39) and Brad Schumacher (3/38) chipped in with top and lower order wickets.  Easts are well placed at 1/85 in reply.  Opener, Alex Thomas, is well placed for next weekend, with 53no at stumps.

Ex-Services Cricket Club are reminding cricket fans that they will be collecting gold coin donations and selling moustaches at this weekend's junior and senior games.  Funds raised will go to the Movember appeal for Beyondblue and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, so please bring some loose change or folded notes for a worthy cause this weekend.  For further information, visit the website: www.movember.com.au and take a look some of the mo's on display at "Armidale Ex-Services Cricket Club" while you're there.

Send 'em In, Chase 'em Down

Back to Top of Page                                                                Bishop 124 sees off Guyra

It was a good day to send the other team in last weekend's round of the Armidale District Cricket Competition with Hillgrove first grade one of only two sides to bat first and win in all 4 grades. The other big story to come out of the weekend in the lower grades was the continuing success of St Kilda, who top the table in both 3rd and 4th grade and added another centurian in Mick Bishop, who hit 124 as St Kilda 3rds mowed down a very competitive 6/199 from 2nd placed Guyra for the loss of just 4 wickets in only 27 overs.  Matt Munzenrider (65 no) gave the grading committee food for thought as he boosted his average to 107.  Guyra would have been pleased with their efforts with the willow with Jack Kliendienst (53) and Bruce Coppock (40) providing the bulk of the runs, while Nick Levy took 3/26 to again feature prominently.  But with Bishop and Munzenrider sharing a 135 run partnership for the 3rd wicket at better than a run a ball, it was never enough.

Hillgrove would likewise have been relatively pleased as they scored 7/180 against Easts with Adam Croft top-scoring with 51 while Matt Swain took 3/23 for Easts, however Easts comfortably chased down the total with Daniel Connor scoring 57 and Jamie Vesey (43) keeping up his good early season form.

Meanwhile TAS 3rds rolled Centrals for 52 to take a share of 2nd place thanks to opening bowlers, Jamie Wood (4/21) and Callum James (3/18) and despite losing 5 wickets had little trouble chasing down the total.

In 4th grade, Hillgrove scored 5/157 highlighted by an half-century opening stand between Mick Brennan and Hugh Reeves, but Uralla, after slumping to 6/67 recovered to take the match thanks to Jay Grills 65 no and take 2nd place on the table.  Servies took the points over Guyra after Guyra couldn't muster the numbers, while St Kilda stayed at the top of the table with a bye.

In the crossover game, Guyra 2nds were too strong for City 3rds, knocking them over for 58 thanks to Matt Jackson (3/14) and chasing down the runs with the loss of 4 wickets.  The effort of Sam Dunn (4/17) of City was impressive as he took all 4 Guyra wickets to fall.

In 2nd grade, Hillgrove stayed ahead of the pack with a convincing win over City, who were bowled out for 69 as Phil McElroy (4/6) exploited the conditions to a tee and Declan Waters (3/24) gave able support.  Hillgrove had little trouble chasing down the total with 8 wickets in hand and Nick Sewell scored 40 no.

TAS scored 9/151 against Easts, thanks to to good young batting prospects in Will Caiger (51) and Luke Webster (48).  Both these batsmen are averaging over 40 and look to be the mainstays of the TAS line-up.  Steve Hayden continued his good bowling form with 3/19 and Will Frost provided great support with 3/26.  Easts cruised to 3/151 to take the points with James Maloney scoring 57 no.

Centrals were the other side to get the points after batting first and they took advantage of a Servies side lacking strike bowlers to score 4/186 with Scott Cutmore (55) and Will Green (44 no) the pick of the batsmen.  Servies lost early wickets and were never in the hunt, crawling to 5/103 as Brad Rafferty (3/10) did the early damage.  Dale Northam continued his good form with 40 no.  The weekend's results have led to a 3 way tussle for 2nd place between Servies, TAS and Easts.

In 1st grade, Servies were sent in by Easts on real Harris Park green top with variable bounce and struggled to handle the seam and swing generated by Joe Horneman (3/23) and captain Greg Carson (3/13) to be bundled out for the devil's number (87).  Servies gave Easts a run for their money thanks to Brad Widders (4/20), but once again it was a case of mo' runs needed for the Movember Men as Easts took a 5 wicket win.  Don't forget to check the Armidale Ex-Services Cricket Club at http://au.movember.com.

Hillgrove remain the team to beat in 1st grade, as the Schaeffer brothers saw them through to 0/54 and then Brad King (49) and Bentley Cropper (44 no) led a number of strong contributions as they piled on 5/227, despite Nick Ada's 3/38.  City were gallant in reply, but fell 37 runs short.  City mustered a number of good contributions though, and captain Andrew Brownlie (51) would be relatively pleased with his return to form.

Servies Cricketers to Become Mo Bros

Armidale Ex-Services Cricket Club has got into the spirit of Movember with all Club members leaving their top lips to grow wild to raise awareness of mens' health issues as part of the sixth annual international event.  Publicity Officer, David Dunlop said the idea had really taken off with the club registering a team on the Movember website (search at www.movember.com.au under "Armidale Ex-Services Cricket Club" and the players happily taking on the challenge.

Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men as each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men’s health.
"I am told our selection committee has established a 'No Mo No Go" policy in first grade and that even our younger 4th grade players have promised not to shave their top lips in support of our top graders." Reported Mr Dunlop.

"Obviously, we really have to thank the wives and girlfriends, who have to put up with some pretty ordinary looking mo's for a couple of weeks, but its all for a great cause and we hope to get some donations and sponsorship to help beyondblue  and the Prostate Cancer Foundation continue their vital work."

He added that the Club will be looking for sponsors for individuals and the team with the aim of raising $500 and improving male awareness of health issues to help change existing habits and attitudes and make men more aware of the risks they face, which should increase early detection and effective treatment.

"We plan to display our Mo's at the end of the month and will be going around the junior & senior cricket venues on Saturday the 28th of Movember seeking gold coin donations and giving some information about men's health.  We also will be updating our Movember website with pictures of the players and the teams.  It promises to be a lot of fun for a good cause."

"Some wag even suggested we get someone to sponsor us for every run the Club or any of its teams score during the month and suggested it could be the cheapest sponsorship in history given some of our lacklustre batting of late, and if any business out there is up for the challenge, feel free to give me a call.  I am convinced that the spirit of Boony and Lillee will see us rise to the challenge both on and off the field"

The idea for Movember came about in 2003 when a few mates were having a beer in a small bar in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Inspired by the women’s health movement, it was recognized that men were lacking a way to engage and actively involve themselves in their own health. They came up with the idea to bring the moustache back for one month, and in doing so, have some fun, raise a small amount of money and hopefully encourage men to talk about their health with each other.
Since this time, Movember has continued to grow each year, both in terms of participation numbers and funds raised. In its first year, 30 Mo Bros took part in Movember and last year, in Australia alone, 125,000 Mo Bro & Sistas got on board, raising more than $8million for each of Movember’s men’s health partners. Now, Movember takes place around the world. Motivated by what was happening in Australia, a further five countries now embrace the Mo each November - New Zealand, US, Canada, UK and Ireland are all helping Movember to achieve its ultimate goal – to change the face of men’s health globally.
To date, Movember has raised AUS$60 million globally for the fight against prostate cancer and depression in men. And, more importantly, as a direct result, male awareness of health issues has improved with Movember helping to spread health messages directly to millions of Mo Bros & Sistas around the world.

Back to Top of Page                                        Things Look Up For Guyra and St Kilda

Guyra and St Kilda have continued strong starts to the season after convincing wins in round 2 of the Armidale District Cricket competitition.  Guyra are going from strength to strength. as they top the table in 3rd grade and collected 1st innings points over City in 2nd grade despite rain preventing the second day's play. To top things off, they now have added a 4th grade side, which will play its first game against Uralla this Saturday in Guyra.  Both teams have experienced people at the top with Campbell Wolfenden (Guyra) and Steve Davies (St Kilda) both having the knowledge to build a club from the ground up.

St Kilda is building some momentum of their own with a commanding innings defeat of Centrals in 3rd grade and a comfortable win in 4ths over Uralla.  The St Kilda 3rds performance was the best of the round with Nick Levy scoring 118 not out to follow his 50 in the first round to be the best with the bat in all grades .  Levy was well supported by James Maxwell (73) and Matt Munzenrieder (65) as the Saints piled on 6/376 before routing a dispirited Centrals for 37 & 79, with Nick Levy taking 3/9 and Jacob Davies 2/2 & 2/9.

TAS 3rds had an 148 run outright win over Easts despite Tom Carter's 3/11 in the first dig and Adam Zirkler's 6/36 in the 2nd for Easts.  Jamie Wood (3/10), Tom Walsh (3/14) and Daniel McDougall (11 overs, 3/4 match figures) were the best of a number of good bowlers for TAS who bowled Easts out for 56 & 52 in a strong team performance.

Ex-Services 2nds (117) snuck home to a 1st innings win over Hillgrove 3rds (108 & 9/112) in a low scoring match at Moran Oval with Servies Tom Heffernan (4/11) backing up with the bat in a last wicket partnership with Col Starkey to get Servies past Hillgrove's 108 in what must have been a nervous time for Servies.  Heffernan is showing some fine early season form with 12 wickets in 2 games, while the 'Groves Matt Tremayne (5/35) produced his best ever figures..

In 4th grade, Hillgrove continued its excellent early season form, scoring 187 spurred on by Aaron Whackett (93) as they overcame Ex-Services (117) by 70 runs.  Whackett fell in the nervous nineties, bowled by Matt Butler, who took 3/40 for Servies.  Cody Graham top scored with 42 for Servies in reply and Hugh Reeves took 3/13 for Hillgrove.

St Kilda 4ths (161) had a 51 run win over Uralla (110) in Uralla with Lachlan Foley scoring 45 for the Saints and Sam Townsend taking 3/25 for Uralla, Colvin Williams continued some good form with 25 for Uralla and Wayne Bishop (3/22) and Kieren Pereira (3/11) were the pick of the St Kilda bowlers..

In 2nd Grade Hillgrove (222) got home over Easts (217) by 2 wickets thanks to an unbeaten 84 from Tom Prosser who kept the innings rolling after Blair Chalmers retired on 50 last weekend.  Will Frost (2/9) was the best with the ball for Easts.

In 1st grade, City had a convincing innings win over Ex-Services thanks to captain Andrew Brownlie (82) who eventually fell to Servies captain Brad Widders (4/49), but steered his side to 251.  Adam Murrell continued on from his 7/56 last week to make it a 10 wicket match with 3/28 in the second innings as Servies were bowled out for 79.

Hillgrove collected 1st innings points over Easts as Andrew Byrne (55) followed Matt Schaeffer's 68 to guide Hillgrove to 230.  They were made to work hard for their runs by Matt House (19 overs 1/34) & Joe Horneman (20 overs to take 2/49), but captain Greg Carson (4/25) took the wickets.  After being bowled out for 91 in the first innings, Easts young side gained a lot from their second innings as they comfortably moved to 2/79 with Luke Uphill scoring 39 not out in his first game in the top grade.

The pick of the round this weekend looks likely to be the St Kilda v. Guyra 3rd grade game at Elizabeth Park,  while the Hillgrove v. City game at the Sportsground should be a litmus test for the City 1st graders.

IDraw:  Round 3:  November 7 & 14

Back to Top of Page                                      Just For The Reckord ... These Boys Can Bat

It was a weekend for the Rec'k'ord books as youngster Hugh Reckord and his brother Angus scored 255 runs between them.  There must have been plenty of happy faces round the Sunday Roast after big brother Angus (in the midst of his HSC) scored his second half century of the season against Ex-Services in 1st grade and picked up a wicket and younger brother Hugh scored half his teams runs with 49 in the first innings against Guyra in 2nd grade and backed up to be 36 not out at stumps.  Hugh picked up where he left off the next day to score his maiden ton in the Junior Rep game against Narrabri with 118.  Its weekends like these that make the efforts of their parents worthwhile.

In 4th grade Uralla proved too strong for Ex-Services Colvin Williams taking 4/15 to skittle Servies for 66, a total that had little trouble mowing down to have the one-dayer done and dusted by tea.  In the other 4th grade game, Hillgrove hit a massive 8/258 off their 40 overs with the old master Ian Reeves compiling another 50 before retiring and Aaron Whackett keeping up his good early season form with 52.  Daniel Preston 3/27 and Nathan Street 3/52 were the pick of the St Kilda Bowlers.  In reply, after a lot of leather chasing in the field, St Kilda were bowled out for 125 with Hillgrove sharing the wickets around for an easy 133 run victory.

In 3rd Grade, the crossover game between Ex-Servies 2nds and Hillgrove 3rds is interesting poised.  Servies bowling was bolstered by the return of Jared Graham (3/11) and together with Tom Heffernan (3/18) they rattled through the Grove to bowl them out for 108.  In reply they were comfortably placed at 3/79 but lost 3 quick wickets late in the day to be 6/85 and still needing another 24 for first innings points.  Much credit for the Hillgrove fightback must go to Matt Tremayne (3/26) and Darren Hurst (21 and 2/14) who bowled well in partnership as Servies played for stumps.  No scores have been received for the TAS-Easts game or the St Kilda-Centrals game, while City were forced to forfeit to Guyra in a disappointment for the mountain men, who are keen as mustard this season.   All teams are reminded that scoresheets are to be delivered to the Express by 10am Sunday each weekend.

In 2nd Grade, Guyra have taken first innings points over City on the back of Tom Skipper (93) who fell to the nervous nineties, but helped his side to 254.  Joe Ninnes was again the standout for City with 3/39.  Hugh Reckord (49) gave good support with 2/17 and backed up with the bat. M Blair (5/40) and Matt Bull (3/44) doing the damage. Guyra enforced the follow on, but Reckord continued were he left off in the first innings, opening with Ian Grant (45 no) to be 36 no as City cruised to 0/86 at stumps, still 70 runs adrift, but with 10 wickets in hand going into day 2.

Easts and Hillgrove made light work of the Rologas pitch, as Easts scored 217, with 10 batsmen reaching double figures, highlighted by Jamie Vesey (55), Declan Waters taking 3/89 off 18 overs.  In reply, Hillgrove were 0/73 at stumps with Blair Chalmers 50 no, leaving the Grove chasing 145 for 1st innings points.  TAS won a forfeit over Centrals in the other 2nd grade game.

In 1st grade, it was not a day to bat first as Adam Murrell took 7/56 to undo some excellent early work from Josh and Liam Smith and old stager Scott Graham (29) and have Servies bowled out for 107.  His bowling was backed up by his Angus Reckord (52) who hit his 2nd half century of the season only to fall to a good diving catch in an otherwise chanceless innings.  His innings sees City well placed at 5/160 with captain, Andrew Brownlie 37 no.  In the Grand Final replay, Andrew Curry (5/22) went through the Easts top order like his namesake to take his second Michelle in 2 games as Easts were rolled for 91.  Hillgrove replied strongly with a half century opening stand from the Schaeffer brothers, with Matt Schaeffer going on to score 68 to back up his 2/24 and see the Grove through to 4/145 at stumps.

This weekend should provide plenty of good cricket to watch, with the Easts-Hillgrove 2nd grade game at Rologas the most interesting poised.  At Moran Oval, the Crossover game still has plenty of life in it and it would be worth the trip up the hill to see how the Armidale City-Guyra game winds up.  In 4th grade, Uralla take on St Kilda at Newling 2 and Ex-Services take on the high flying Hillgrove.

Back to Top of Page                                        Colts Too Strong for Quirindi

The Dumaresq Colts Representative side proved too strong for Quirindi in the opening game of the MA Connelly Cup played at the Armidale Sportsground on Sunday.  Armidale won the toss and batted first setting a competitive 210 thanks to Matt Preston (52), Andrew Brownlie (41) and Josh Croft (42).  In reply Qurindi were bowled out for 159, with Gavin Bickerstaff (63) the best of their batsmen.  Mick Schaeffer took 3/24, Mitch Moore 2/23 and Andrew Brownlie backed up his batting with 2/35 as the Colts cruised to a 51 run win to kick off their rep season in fine style.

In other rep news, the Armidale 1sts Representative side will play Inverell in the first round of the War Veterans Cup and SCG Cup competitions this Sunday at the Armidale Sportsground from 10 am.  The Armidale side is:  Adam O'Sullivan (c),  Alex Frost, Lachlan Fulloon, Matt House, Dean Moore, Adam Murrell, Matt Preston, Michael Schaefer, Matt Schaefer, Andrew Skinner, Liam Smith, Cameron Wood.

Back to Top of Page                       Laury Century Not Enough in Close Wins in for Guyra and St Kilda

The first round of the Armidale District Cricket season two matches go down to the wire in 3rd grade, with Guyra holding out Hillgrove by just 8 runs and the St Kilda wagging the tail to beat City by 1 wicket despite a wonderful debut century from City's Chris Laury.

In Guyra, the locals batted first and scored 216, led by K Taylor's 80 with vital lower order support from  B Stace (47) and J Stace (23).  Ben Rankmore (3/22) and Bob Kirk (3/44) doing the best with the ball for the 'Grove.  Hillgrove had a number of good contributions, led by D Hurst (44), Sam Prosser (39), Ben Rankmore (32) and A Gallagher (29 n.o.),  but no-one went on with their innings and they were left at 7/208 and tantalisingly close at the end of their 40 overs.  W. Roberts (3/40) the pick of the Guyra bowlers.

The St Kilda-Armidale City match was another tense tussle.  Armidale City scored 9/211 thanks mainly to newcomer Chris Laury (120) and Kyle Denton who was run out for 60.  J. Northam took 3/19 for St. Kilda.  St Kilda lost a couple of early wickets then took to City's bowling with Matt Munzenreider (84)  and Nick Levy (50) having them strongly placed until they fell and the lower order of Jacob Davies (10), T Moir (16) J Northam (11) got them close before Keith Kelly (9 no) hit the winning runs in a thrilling finish. Joe Ninnes bowled beautifully to take 4/33 with the ball for City.

Easts cruised to victory over Centrals at Elizabeth Park as they held a 7 man Centrals to 120 runs and then scored 3/126 off 21 overs.  Gavin Nelson (1/2 and 72 not out) was best for Easts.

In 4ths Hillgrove took the honours over Uralla, scoring 5/183 led by Scott Brennan (60) with J McFarland taking 3/30 for Uralla.  Uralla battled hard, led by C Williams (57) and despite a good effort from the tail, they ran out of time at 7/144 off their 40 overs.  The other 4th grade match was forfeited by Ex-Servies to St. Kilda.

In 2nds, the second day of the 1st round saw Centrals stage an outstanding comeback to scare Easts.  After trailing by 150 on the first innings (Matt Preson 104), Centrals scored 232 in the 2nd innings thanks to Cam Mundy (56), Scotty Cutmore (42) and a number of other good contributions.  They then had Easts on the rack at 7/69 as J Boland (3/17 to go with 2/3 in the 1st inning) and Brad Rafferty (3/21) tore into the top order.  Although they ran out of time, Centrals can take a lot from this turnaround.

Tom Heffernan of Servies took one more City wicket to finish with 5/22 and former TAS player, Alistair Doyle took 3/18 as City were bowled out for 134.  Leading by 64 on the 1st innings, Servies tried to attack to set up a chance for outright victory, but were held back by Brett Mowle (3/28) and despite declaring a 7/112, Easts batted out time.

Hillgrove took 1st innings points over Guyra, declaring at 9/219 with Nick Sewell top-scoring with 63 and Matt Jackson taking 4/49. Guyra were under the pump, having been bowled out for 107 last week and in the 2nd innings they again struggled against the accurate bowling of Phil McElroy (3/31) and Dave Waters (3/35) but held on  by 1 wicket to be 9/137 at the end of the match as James Sharpe (18 no) and Matt Bull (13 no) held on to their last wicket.  The TAS 2nds v. TAS 3rd crossover game was deferred until October 21-22.

In 1st grade Hillgrove gained outright victory over Ex-Services with Andrew Curry snaring 6/30 in the first inning to win the Rock of the Round, as Servies were bowled out for a paltry 74.  Servies were sent back in and scored 201 in their second innings, highlighted by Dom Brown taking his chances to score 86 and win the Willow Wielder of the Week. Jay Wright opened with a hard-hitting 43, but it was all too little too late as Servies could never make up the 1st inning deficit.  Hillgrove had little trouble chasing down the 70 odd to win by 9 wickets.

Easts overcame a determined Armidale City by 30 runs on the 1st innings at Lambert - a great win considering they were 5/33 early on the first day.  Angus Reckord scored 62 for City, but struggled to find the big partnership that Matt Foster (70) and Alex Frost (67) had formed for Easts last Saturday.  As always, Matt House did the damage with the ball with 5/35 to bowl City out for 184.

Back to Top of Page                                                       Preston Century A Perfect Season Opener.

Easts 2nd grade opener M Preston had a perfect start to the Amidale District Cricket season with a century in the 2nd grade game against Centrals on Saturday.  A number of matches are interestingly poised after the first day of the 2-day games in 1st and 2nd grade, and a number of young players are making their mark right from the start.   3rd and 4th grades will commence this Saturday with 1-day matches to complete the first round.

In 1st grade, Easts recovered  from 5/31 to score 214 thanks to Matt Foster (70) and young Alex Frost (67) turning the Premier’s inning around.  Armidale City newcomber, Jesse O’Grady was the pick of their bowlers with 3/45 although Adam Murrell’s 2/30 should not go unmentioned.  City are well placed at 1/13 at stumps, but runs on the board are hard to beat.

In the other 1st grade game, Hillgrove Colts are right on top of Ex-Services, scoring 215 after being sent in.  The middle order scored the bulk of the runs, highlighted by another youngster in Mitch Moore (47), who was last out in a happy return from injury.  Best with the ball for Servies were Dom Brown (3-27) and Jared Graham who took 3-29 in the 16 year old’s second top grade appearance.  In reply, Servies started brightly, but were quickly brought to heel by Hillgrove newcomber, Alex Rack (2-6) who bowled at a lively pace and got movement in the air and off the pitch.  He was well supported by Andrew Curry (2-13) and a sharp fielding effort, highlighted by Mick Schaeffer’s direct hit from side on to run out Josh Martin (0).  Servies slumped to 5/33 at stumps and will need the mother of all tail wags to get back into this one.

In 2nd grade, its a different story for Ex-Services as they hold the whip hand over City after compiling 196 in a solid batting performance highlighted by a captain’s knock from Tony Butler (55).  Servies then went for the jugular with young left-armer Tom Heffernan taking the top order apart in a devastating spell of 4/10 off 5 overs in the best bowling performance in all grades.  Heffernan’s radar was spot on as he bowled 3 of the top 4 batsman.  City found a respite after his spell and recovered to 5/84 at stumps, still 112 adrift.

Easts will be looking for an outright next week against Centrals after they bowled them out for 104, with Clarrie Moran (59) providing the lone hand.  Steve Hayden (3/9) took 3 top order wickets and Luke Uphill (3/34) took 3 middle order wickets.  In reply, Easts cruised to 8/241 as M. Preston (104) dominated the bowling and started the season in the best possible style to be the best with the bat on the weekend.

Guyra started well in their match against Hillgrove, with openers M. Jackson (34) and T. Martin (25) compiling a half-century opening stand, but with only 9 batsmen, their team-mates couldn’t carry on and Guyra were dismissed for 106.  The cagey Phil McElroy took 4/25.  In reply the ’Grove took advantage of a short-staffed Guyra field to move to 3/173 at stumps with Nick Sewell 58 not out and young Ben Marshall 34 not out.  Hillgrove will be pushing on for maximum points next weekend.

Third grade commences on Saturday with 1 day matches between
